Dumms_v0.2

February 4th, 2025.

I have just released the "0.2" version of the game. This update brings mostly QoF updates, like Game Saving and better UI.

Here is a list of all the changes:

- Add logic for Game Saving.

- Change UI a little bit.

- Finished "UPGRADES" System.

- Added Tutorials only for first minutes of the game.

There are still some things to change, but I think the game is ready to be shipped to Steam, since the core gameplay is already finished.

I do not have great expectations about the game but I do think it is a fun experience, so I think the people that actually get to play it will enjoy it.

In the last post I mentioned I would also like to share some thoughts I had while developing the game, so here are some about this particular update:

- I love Odin, it is such a great language. It is easy to use and understand when you are starting. Making games without all the stress that an engine brings just becomes easier everyday, that is also something that motivates me a lot to keep working on the game and other projects.

- I struggled a lot with the idea of making a "Web Build". I tried for 3 days straight and I just could not make it work. I had some good people help me a little, but everytime I made a step forward it felt like I was going 2 steps back because new errors would appear and the game just did not work at all. Making a web build still is one of my goals for this game but I will NOT do it in a near future. I just want to focus on having a great game that people can enjoy, even if that means giving up on some accessibility.

- I realised UI is not that bad, I was just doing it wrong. The entire game runs with a "hot reload" system on the background, so I can position and scale UI elements on the go. This system works great, but only for positioning, not scaling. Scaling a sprite is just not something I would do if I could start over and it's something I will definitely not do in future projects. I really understood how rendering sprites works these last few days and how scaling a sprite can be achieved by just making the sprite bigger in aseprite. I know it sounds obvious, but when you are learning, most of these things slip through and you do not realise until it's too late.

Anyways, those are some thoughts I had while working on the game and also in general about low level game development, which what I am doing with this game and what I want to keep doing for future projects.

Thanks everyone who reads this and tries the game out.

Hope you have a great time!
